Wooden packaging – ISPM 15
The International Standard on Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM) No. 15, created by the FAO, regulates the wooden packaging used in foreign trade, and describes the phytosanitary measures to reduce the risk of introduction and spread of forest pests and diseases in the countries.
The treatment of this standard is necessary when exporting to the most industrial countries, including those of the EU, the United States, Canada, Mexico, China, Korea, Australia and New Zealand, among others. Countries which require ISPM-15 have the right to deny entry at their borders to goods on pallets, boxes and wooden packaging that have not been treated, marked and certified in accordance with their regulations.
The European Union has transposed ISPM 15 plant protection treatments into Community law by amending Directive 2000/29/EC, which entered into force on 1 March 2005. In Spain, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA), through the Directorate-General for Plant Health, manages the register of companies authorised to apply ISPM No. 15.
What products does it affect?
To dunnage, containers, packaging or wooden pallets with a thickness of more than 6 mm. Those made only of technical wood (plywood, chipboard, fiberboard, etc.), or with materials that have undergone processes equivalent to heat treatment (HT) in their manufacture are excluded.
Countries requiring ISPM15
This list includes the countries that require compliance with ISPM 15 for wooden packaging so that it can enter their countries without restrictions, but it should be noted that it is indicative as more and more countries are joining this requirement.
It is important to note that the list is indicative since more and more countries are joining this requirement.
In the event that the country of destination is not included in this list, on the same website, in the linkhttp://www.magrama.gob.es/app/CPRP/CPRP3.aspx?id=es, you can consult the phytosanitary requirements for the introduction of plants and plant products according to the country of destination.
